eRequirements

A Free Software Requirements Tool
www.erequirements.com
I created the eRequirements tool as a response to having been involved on several software development projects. It was pretty clear that gathering requirements and getting consensus from the client and the team was a make or break step in the process. However without a guide and structure to explore the details of the design it was all too easy for everyone to be in agreement without having any clear idea of what they were actually agreeing to. eRequirements is a system designed to formalize that process and enable anyone to have a clear headstart on the process.

Currently the project is undergoing major revisions and will be migrating towards an opensource structure in the future. This will enable anyone to download the system and freely run and modify it on their own servers. Please check out the current site as always feedback is very welcome. Here’s a section from the site that describes the process …

Software Engineering
Most software projects come in late, overbudget, and missing core features - why? Isn’t building software easy - all it takes is a computer and the right wizz-kid, right? That might be fine if the goal is to have fun programming, but creating quality software that you can take your business to the next level takes a lot more effort, experience, and expertize.

Why it’s not Easy
There’s always pressure to just get on and code because process is pure overhead and who wouldn’t want to cut that out? Well here are a few observations as to why that might not be the best strategy.

Critical Stages
So if it doesn’t make sense to just cut out the process, how can we be most efficient about it? Depending on your needs you should pick a process and the right tools to get the most without short changing your ultimate goals.

The eRequirements Tool
Based off my experience working with multiple clients I developed a tool that I could use to make my life a lot easier. It helps guide the process, enable me to capture requirements and use-cases and generate a nice looking report instantly. That way I can focus both mine and the client’s time on exploring the design of their software.
